Perisher Final Day

3rd October 2011
by Steve Cuff

The 2011 winter season came to a close today with a spectacular “Blue Bird” powder day at Perisher.
A final top up of 7cm snow sure put a smile on skier’s faces as they lapped the Eyre t-bar and Mt P double chair and carved up the 56cm of snow that fell in the past week.
There were also plenty of adventurous skiers and the hike up the Olympic t-bar line was like a sea of ants at one stage. But we are sure the turns were worth the effort as there were fresh tracks on offer and by lunchtime there was a fair amount of those lines well and truly poached.

Ideally we would have liked this snow to have fallen in August or early September, but to finish the season on such a great day will leave many good memories to last into the summer months.

“skitracks” had the pleasure of skiing with Richard Jameson, technical director for the Australian Professional Snowsport Instructors (APSI) who sure made the turns look easy.
Plus as usual he was trying to iron out the kinks in the old “skitracks” technique.
Tough gig that one…..??
“I wish August was as good as the last day of the season. The powder on Mt P was a great way to finish season 2011,” said Jameson after finishing for the day.

There were many local people cranking out their final turns on what can only be described as an ordinary season that fizzled away in September due to lack of regular snow falls.
But as they say, there is always next year.
We will post our final official season photo below and wonder who was the hardy sole who made it to the top of the Smiggins “dupey”to leave their signature.
It was a great effort, let us know who you might be…….??
